KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – Chris Hunter of Austin East High School became the first GRAD Scholar to receive a laptop from WATE 6 On Your Side’s telethon on Thursday.
Hunter came to the Project GRAD office in Knoxville with his grandmother Louise Fletcher. Like every GRAD Scholar, he is required to show proof of enrollment in a post secondary institution.
Hunter has already gotten a lot of attention as a standout on the AE football team, and recently accepted an offer from West Point.
“When I went up there to visit, I just got so comfortable I knew I had to make that decision and I know after I get done with West Point I can give something back to my family because they did a lot of sacrifices for me,” Hunter said.
“He’s always had the desire to learn and be a competitor in most everything so academics, the same thing, and it was just an expectation, you know. Sports? That’s good, but academics comes first,” says Fletcher.
We presented Hunter with a laptop and afterwards, he had a special message for the hardworking Project GRAD staff.
“Thank you guys for supporting me, and I’m going to make y’all proud. I’m going to do good for y’all. Thank you.”
Hunter also declared the laptop “West Point worthy.”
As more students finalize the college enrollment process, they’ll be picking up their laptops as well.
