While Azam Khan has been reprimanded over his objectionable comment against rival BJP candidate Jaya Prada, Maneka Gandhi is facing action over her recent remarks on Muslims.
The commission said it strongly condemns Azam Khan’s statement and is punishing him for his misconduct.
At an election rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur, Khan had said, “People of Rampur, people of Uttar Pradesh and people of India, it took you 17 years to understand her (Jaya Prada’s) reality. But, I could recognize it in 17 days that she wears a khaki under****.”
Meanwhile, Union minister and BJP leader Maneka Gandhi had told Muslims to vote for her as they will need her once the Lok Sabha elections are over.
“We are not Mahatma Gandhi’s children that we keep giving and not get anything in return,” she said in Sultanpur’s Muslim-dominated Turabkhani area last week.
Both the leaders were slammed by opposition parties for their remarks.
FIR has also been registered against Khan
+ under the Indian Penal Code’s section 509 and provisions of the Representation of the People Act. The section pertains to word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman.
Earlier today, the poll panel took similar action against Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and BSP supremo Mayawati over their alleged hate speeches. Adityanath and Mayawati have been barred from campaigning for 72 and 48 hours respectively.
