Fargo shelters seeing impact of new lease for several mobile home parks now facing a 'breed ban' – Valley News Live

FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live)- A number of people in three mobile home parks in Fargo and West Fargo are getting rid of their dogs. They’ve been told they have to and that’s because of new ownership. As you can imagine, they’re sad about it and don’t want to do it but they have to. Some of them have been calling our Whistleblower Hotline. What’s more, a local animal shelter says they’ve been flooded with calls about these residents needing a place to surrender their dogs to.

“Now they’re telling me I have to get rid of my dog. I will not do that,” says Brookwood Resident, Antionette Behrns.

Antionette Behrns is very upset with the new rules at the Brookwood Mobile Home Park. People living there along with the Countryside Estates and Riviera Heights communities have been slapped with a new lease. That brings with it a ban on certain breeds of dogs being called dangerous.

One of Antionette’s beloved dogs is on that list but she has a plan and is not going down without a fight.

“I’m getting a letter from my doctor so they can’t take the dog,” says Behrns.

She tells us she’s working on getting her dog certified as an emotional support animal. But she says that won’t work for everyone and this new rule is having a ripple effect across city lines.

“The last one we received was from a lady that has to potentially surrender two of her dogs that have lived with her almost her whole life,” says 4 Luv of Dog Founder/President, Kish Mackin.

The president and founder of 4 Luv of Dogs, Kish Mackin tells us shes gotten a number of messages this week from residents who need to surrender their dogs.

“We get to the point where we pay to board dogs. We have a facility for short-term dogs that are looking for fosters but if they’re full and we say no, the dogs will die,” says Mackin.

In fact, they’ve gotten so many that they’ve put a call out for more foster homes and another shelter in town is in a similar boat. The people over at Homeward Animal Shelter say they’re seeing a spike this week in the number of people needing to find a new home for their dogs because of this new lease.

But that’s not where Antionette’s best friend is going to end up. She says she would rather move than get rid of her dog and she tells us that’s exactly what some of her neighbors plan on doing.

On top of banning specific breeds, rent will also be going up for residents by $45 a month. Once again, the new owners of the parks are pointing the finger at insurance companies and governmental agencies that have named these breeds as dangerous. Adding they feel for the residents and share their disappointment.
