The government tabled the triple talaq bill today and said the aim was to ensure justice and gender equality. The aim deserves support but the method adopted is unwarranted. Supreme Court has already set aside the practice of triple talaq. Therefore, it has no legal sanctity. A bill to criminalise it is meaningless and can result in unforeseen complications. Instead, the practice must be fought in the social realm.
