Gadget Watch: One Point Five ingenious bicycle

There may not be much, if any, high technology involved, but I can legitimately file it under our Gadget Watch category, I feel. The key point, of course, is that the smaller wheel makes it an easier proposition for carrying

The eight-geared, 1.5-wheeled vehicle is the product of a Japanese company, Outre,

Do watch the video below if you’re feeling sceptical. I think this could be a winner! Especially for short hops.

Specification

The spec is:

  • Frame: Chromoly Wheel: F-8 inch, R-20 inch (406)
  • Shift: SHIMANO ALTUS 8-speed Shifter: SHIMANO RevoShift
  • Brake: F-band, R-disc (140mm)
  • Weight: 10kg
  • Accessories: kickstand, bell, reflector

Gadget site New Atlas draws comparison with a very similar looking German “half-bike” bike, the Halbrad. But it goes on:

While the Halbrad is a handlebar-less singlespeed, however, the One Point Five incorporates a vertical bar that’s equipped with a brake lever and a Shimano RevoShift twist shifter. The former activates a rear disc brake and a band-style front brake, while the latter allows riders to shift between eight gears via a Shimano Altus rear derailleur.

Pricing seems to start from ¥162,000, which I make equivalent to £1,200.
