An Irish golf fan has kitted out his local club with a gadget that helps prevent the spread of infection on courses post lockdown.
John Kelly, a design engineer from Baltinglass, Co Wicklow, put together a new gadget that fits inside the hole on the green.
Using a lever that tracks up the side of the flag, players can easily lift the ball out without the need to use their hands, reports the Irish Mirror.
Kelly spotted the design from an American company who have patented the invention Stateside already.
The new gadget can help players protect themselves from the spread of infection as golf courses and tennis courts become the first sports facilities to open from lockdown.
Kelly told the Irish Mirror: “The design is from an American company who have it patented there and not in Europe.
“In the video we can be seen using the grip end of the club to lift the device but looking back at it now it is probably recommended to use the putter end instead!”
Golfers came out swinging yesterday in the Republic of Ireland as clubs reopened for the first time since COVID-19.
Tee-times were snapped up in no time when the Irish Government announced that both golf and tennis could resume under Phase 1 of the easing of restrictions.
Golf will return in Northern Ireland on Wednesday as part of the NI Executive’s pathway to recovery from coronavirus.
A number of protocols have been put in place across the island.
Irish Health Minister Simon Harris did issue a warning, however, insisting no one in the Republic should travel beyond the current limit to use sporting facilities.
He said: “People say ‘look, would it not be okay if I just did this’ or ‘if I just did that’.
“And I get it, on an individual level that sounds like very little risk.
“The only thing is, if you do it, lots of other people are able to do it and it increases a lot of risk.”
He told Morning Ireland on RTE Radio 1: “You do it for golf and then people are going to say the playground is seven kilometres away.
“And people are going to say ‘can I do it for that?’ And then people will say can I do it for this shop and that shop.
“It’s the cumulative effect of all that movement and extra movement brings about extra risks.”
