MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Mobile Police are investigating at least 10 shootings taking place over the last two weekends, but one shooting, in particular, has Mayor Sandy Stimpson taking action.
Kids playing soccer heard gunshots ring out. Police say several shots were fired by men in the parking lot of Sage Park on Friday night. Now the city is making sure it doesn’t happen again.
The Mayor Tweeted saying that the City is taking swift action to enhance public safety and deter future incidents. He continued with another Tweet saying that the City will add cameras increasing surveillance of the park and surrounding areas, including the parking lot where the shots were fired.
We sat down with Mobile Police Chief Lawrence Battiste talking about what’s causing the violence. He said, “The fact that they have easy access to weapons, and then, of course, the emotional outburst leads to these type of shooting incidents.”
Chief Battiste says police are changing their approach, taking steps to be more visible, deterring criminals. He said, “We’ve mandated that the officers, as they patrol the area, from time to time not just drive through the area, but to get out and walk through the area as well to have an increased presence.“
Mayor Stimpson says Sage Park will be the second park where the City will add cameras. The first done was Figures Park.
