CHERRY HILL – Not all summer playtime happens outdoors.

Towns can be built, battles waged and intruders conquered … all from the air-conditioned comfort of a living room.

If you’re the parent of a gamer — or a controller freak in your own right — you can find a giant playground in Cherry Hill this weekend.

New Jersey Gamer Con will be held at the Crowne Plaza on Saturday, July 7, and Sunday, July 8. It’s a new venue for the fourth annual event.

This year’s convention will feature an expanded version of a popular feature: the 24-hour free-play arcade featuring new and retro gaming consoles.

Visitors can also expect tournaments for “Super Smash Brothers” and “Mario Kart 8” enthusiasts, tabletop games, a vendor marketplace, and the opportunity to meet special guests.

Participants in a cosplay costume contest will be eligible for prizes, including the grand prize of a chance to appear in a Cartoon Network commercial.

Gamer Con founder Jerry Colonna says the event aims to unify gamers.

“I wanted to build a convention that focused on bringing the local gaming community together, while also providing a fun, safe and open atmosphere for everyone to enjoy, from ages 1 to 91,” Colonna said in a press release.

Tickets are $20 for one day and $30 for a weekend pass, not including online fees. Kids ages 10 and under are free with each paid adult admission. For tickets and more information, go to
