NEWSNIGHT presenter Emily Maitlis shamed Amazon on Twitter after she was sent packages of porridge and stain remover rather than the iPad she’d ordered.
Worryingly, it seemed that the journalist wasn’t the only one who experienced this issue as plenty of other shoppers reported similar situations.
In her first post, under a picture of Oat So Simple porridge surrounded by Amazon packaging, she wrote: “Ok this has happened twice in a row. I ordered a new iPad – the box is delivered to a safe space (ie no one rang the bell) and this is what is inside – not ordered.
“Think they have a serious problem, anyone else have this?”
She then posted another picture of a box of Dr Beckman stain remover.
Someone appears to be replacing valuable items with other stuff of similar weight in transit?
Emily wrote: “This was what arrived yesterday instead of the iPad - someone appears to be replacing valuable items with other stuff of similar weight in transit?”
Sympathising with her dilemma, Susan Jordan commented: “This happened to me a couple of years ago except it was a Radley purse which was replaced with similar weighted objects (Radley were good as gold with sending me a replacement.”
Another follower, Jonathan Stewart, wrote: “I know someone else this happened to – he bought a Macbook on Amazon, box arrived with similarly weighted goods (but not a Macbook), then had lots of trouble proving that his MacBook hadn’t arrived and therefore getting his money back.

Dan Vernede commented: “I ordered an air conditioning unit from @amazon and got 40 litres of white wine vinegar instead…”
Recently, Amazon sent 20 order confirmations containing sensitive information to the wrong people following a technical issue.
