OnePlus recruits testers for the OnePlus 3/3T’s Android Pie update in China, global release imminent – XDA Developers

OnePlus did not really do justice to some of its older devices, namely the OnePlus 2 and the OnePlus X. But with the OnePlus 3 (released in June 2016) and OnePlus 3T (released in November 2016) onwards, the company really did step up their game, providing a much better hardware and software experience. OnePlus even went ahead and updated both these phones in November 2018 with OxygenOS 5.0.7 and that month’s Android security patches.

However, both the devices continue to be on Android 8.0 Oreo up until now. Android 8.1 Oreo was released in December 2017, but OnePlus eventually decided to skip over this release in favor of providing Android Pie to the devices. The caveat with the release was that the OnePlus 3/3T would receive their updates after the OnePlus 6/6T and OnePlus 5/5T, which in turn meant that there would be a significant wait after Android 9 was released before users could enjoy it officially on the OnePlus 3/3T.

The wait appears to be finally coming to an end. OnePlus has recruited testers for HydrogenOS’s next update based on Android Pie for the Chinese region. For the international region, internal testing has been underway for OxygenOS based on Android Pie, but the software team hit a small roadblock with Google CTS. Since H2OS does not need to pass CTS, the beta update for H2OS may be released in the coming week.

Latest Update: Hey guys, we found some issues in the Google CTS. Our software team is working on them and will have another round of CTS very soon. Considering HydrogenOS doesn’t have to pass the CTS, we may release Pie beta based on HydrogenOS early this week.

The global release for official OxygenOS based on Android Pie is now imminent for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. It might take the team some more time to iron out the final set of issues, but we can now be practically optimistic about these devices receiving the latest official version of Android.

The OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T have continued to age gracefully, maintaining relevancy as capable smartphones even today. My own OnePlus 3 has been handed down to my mother after a battery swap, who now uses it for light casual gaming, Instagram, YouTube and IM. The build quality on the phone has been brilliant in my experience, and the phone also shows no observable signs of ageing (assuming you do not game on the phone). The Android Pie update will be a welcome addition to the whole mix and will add onto the life of this impressive device.
