Plans to establish a King Island chapter of young professionals networking group The Coasters are forging ahead following a trip by delegates last weekend. Co-founder Claire Smith was among a group of Coasters who travelled to King Island to meet with locals, visit businesses and participate in workshops about resilience, leadership and plans for a local group. “We have a really committed bunch over there to progress their plans and realise what the potential of The Coasters is on the island,” she said. The trip comes after seven King Islanders attended The Coasters Winter Symposium at Stanley in July as part of a $17,500 federal government grant. It was also part of the King Island Leaders Program, which is being delivered by the Cradle Coast Authority, federal government and King Island’s council, tourism association and chamber of commerce. Ms Smith, who is also director of strategic services at the CCA, said The Coasters had “achieved far more than any of us could have expected” since it was founded in 2017. “And CCA and our member councils are very proud to be extending that good work to King Island, together with our project partners,” she said. “The Cradle Coast is an amazing place to live, provided that you’re well connected, and we’re here to help people with that”. The King Island chapter of The Coasters is planning to host their first event in early December. Ms Smith hoped the King Island initiatives would open opportunities for “similar things with other small communities in regional areas”.
