Mass Spectrometry in Neuroscience  

Compared to some other disciplines, mass spectrometry has been a little-used tool in neuroscience. But with the advent of faster, smarter MS tools, those days may be numbered. In this infographic, we discover why.

1. Telomeres are the protective caps of our chromosomes and play a central role in the ageing process. Shorter telomeres are associated with chronic diseases and high stress levels can contribute to their shortening. A new study now shows that if telomeres change in their length, that change is also reflected in our brain structure.

2. Researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, led by Kristen Brennand, have dug deeper into the mystery of schizophrenia’s genetic component. In a new study published in Nature Genetics, they explore the potential role of expression quantitative trait loci, or eQTLs, that govern the expression of several genes in schizophrenia.

3. A good workout might not just exhaust your body, but tire out your brain as well, suggests a new study conducted by researchers at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris and the French National Institute of Sport, Expertise, and Performance (INSEP).

4. A new study has concluded that epileptic seizures can probably not be predicted by changes in brain wave patterns that were previously assumed to be characteristic precursors.

5. It turns out that humans aren’t the only animals that fidget. In a new study, researchers observed that the neural activity of mice performing trained tasks indicated that they also seemed to fidget while making decisions.
