Popular social messaging application WhatsApp has received a new update for Android smartphones. The new update now brings support for background playback of videos in the PiP (Picture-in-Picture) format, even while changing chat windows. Now in the updated PiP mode, users can go to different applications while the video plays on a pop-up floating window, all the while when WhatsApp is in the background.

The PiP feature was already available on WhatsApp for iPhones. The iOS update allowed users to play videos while switching chat windows. The latest update now brings the feature to Android smartphones with added background playback feature. This feature is yet to arrive on the iPhone. The new update is now available for testing considering it is still a part of the WhatsApp Beta programme.

The Picture-in-Picture feature first arrived as a part of the WhatsApp for Android back in December last year. The feature allowed video playback on the pop-up floating window only in individual chat and group threads. Once you switched the chat thread, the video would stop playing. The slightly upgraded feature was available on WhatsApp for iPhones from January last year which allowed users to continue watching a video in a pop-up format even while switching different chats.

Now, the Facebook-owned app has upgraded its original feature with some extra firepower and now allows playback of videos on the floating pop-up window while switching different chats. It also supports playback even if you return to the home screen of your Android phone. The window will remain active and you can browse other apps simultaneously.

The feature update was first spotted and reported by WABetaInfo. The new update is a part of the latest WhatsApp beta version update number 2.19.177 for Android smartphones.
