Wreck-It Ralph sequel gets a title, shifts focus from gaming – TechnoBuffalo

Wreck-It Ralph was a hit for Disney, so it’s no surprise to see it get a sequel. Disney has announced the title for that sequel, though, and it suggests a shift away from the gaming focus of the original game, which was centered around an 8-bit gaming character exploring other gaming worlds and encountering licensed game characters and in-jokes about gaming. The new title, announced at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, is Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2.

The stars of the original have all returned, including John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, and Jane Lynch, and Zootopia director Rich Moore is set to helm the movie alongside Phil Johnston.

Are they gonna wreck it?

“This time, Ralph’s wreaking havoc on the web – as only he can do,” Johnston said at the announcement. “The world of the internet is the perfect place to send Ralph and Vanellope. The scope and scale are so vast and the possibilities for comedy are endless.”

The shift to the internet probably makes sense writing-wise, but it feels like a step away from what made the original Wreck-It Ralph successful. There are countless jokes to be made at the Internet’s expense, to be sure, but Wreck-it Ralph was a video game character – not an internet meme.

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-it Ralph 2 is set to release on March 9, 2018.
